Developers preparing for Windows 10 should note that the Windows NT value in the UA string will change from 6.4 to 10.0 with the new release. While users are not likely to notice any difference, this change in the kernel number will affect legacy Windows applications running on the new operating system. Windows 7, for instance shipped with kernel number 6.1, while the Windows 8.1 has kernel number 6.3. In addition to the operating system moniker Windows XP, Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and 10, Microsoft also maintains another numbering convention for the Windows NT family. The Redmond-based company mentioned on its blog that it has changed kernel number from 6.4 to 10. It is however not the only jump in the number related to Windows 10, as the forthcoming operating system will have a new kernel number as well.
